Auger Boring

Boring and emptying the casing in a single step: method, risks in soft soil, boring in rock.

Module preview

4 of 19 slides, as they appear in the module.

  • Slide 1 Auger boring

  • Slide 4 Three methods for installing a steel casing

  • Slide 7 Advantages and constraints

  • Slide 10 Auger boring, animated

Auger boring installs a steel casing with a horizontal boring machine and augers that remove the cuttings as the casing advances.

The module presents the method, its risks in soft soil (augers jammed by cobbles and boulders, excavated volume hard to control), its applications in rock and the criteria for selecting cutting heads.

Objectives

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  • Describe the auger boring method, step by step
  • Position its applications relative to pipe ramming and the down-the-hole hammer
  • Size the casing and assess the risks in soft soil with cobbles and boulders
  • Select a cutting head for the rock encountered
